Para ahorrar un viaje de ida y vuelta, dime tu modelo de iPhone, tu versión de iOS y la versión de la app — la tienes en la pantalla de detalles, la que se abre con el botón i de arriba a la derecha. Suelo contestar en dos o tres días.

Las horas de marea no cuadran con mi playa.

Los modelos de marea se calculan sobre una malla de puntos en el mar, y el punto modelado más cercano puede estar a varios kilómetros de una bahía que se comporta a su manera. Las rías, las bahías cerradas y los sitios del Mediterráneo con rangos de centímetros son los sospechosos habituales. Mándame el nombre del sitio y miro a qué punto se está resolviendo.

¿Sirve para navegar o para pescar en roca?

Para hacerte una idea, sí. Para decidir si pasas una barra o si te quedas sin salida en una cala, no. Es un modelo global, no la tabla oficial de una autoridad portuaria, y en España esa es la de Puertos del Estado o la del Instituto Hidrográfico de la Marina. Las condiciones y los veredictos tampoco son un aviso de seguridad. Consúltalas para cualquier cosa que dependa de acertar.

Dice que mi sitio está tierra adentro.

Si no encuentra mar modelado en unos 330 km, la app se rinde. Si estás en la costa y aun así te lo dice, es un fallo — mándame el nombre del sitio.

Sale una playa que no es la mía en la cabecera.

Cuando el punto de partida está tierra adentro, la app busca el trozo de mar más cercano y luego le pone el nombre de la playa o el puerto que tiene al lado, para que no ponga «un punto en el mar». Si el nombre no te encaja, busca tu sitio directamente por su nombre y guárdalo como favorito: ese nombre ya no cambia.

Las alturas salen en negativo.

Por omisión están medidas respecto al nivel medio del mar, así que en bajamar salen números negativos. Si prefieres los de siempre, abre el botón i y cambia «Alturas desde» a cero de las cartas: es el cero que usan las tablas oficiales y con él todas las alturas son positivas. La diferencia entre pleamar y bajamar es la misma con cualquiera de los dos.

Ese cero la app se lo aprende de las propias mareas del sitio, no lo lee de un plano, así que puede quedar unos centímetros por encima o por debajo del oficial.

¿Cómo pongo un aviso antes de la marea?

Con la campana de la cabecera. Eliges si te interesa la pleamar, la bajamar o las dos, y cuánta antelación quieres: 15 minutos, media hora, una hora o dos. La primera vez, iOS te pedirá permiso para las notificaciones; es la única vez que te lo pide, y si dices que no, el resto de la app sigue funcionando igual.

Los avisos son de un lugar cada vez: si los enciendes en otro sitio, se mudan ahí.

No me ha llegado un aviso.

Tres motivos, por orden de probabilidad. Uno: el permiso está denegado — míralo en Ajustes → Notificaciones → MareAhora. Dos: llevas muchos días sin abrir la app, y aunque iOS la despierta de vez en cuando para renovar los avisos, si el teléfono ha estado apagado o en bajo consumo puede no haberlo hecho; ábrela una vez y se rehacen. Tres: el modo Concentración estaba filtrando las notificaciones.

¿Qué es la cuenta atrás de la pantalla de bloqueo?

Una Actividad en Vivo: la enciendes con el interruptor «Pantalla de bloqueo» de la misma pantalla de avisos, y deja la cuenta atrás hasta la próxima marea a la vista, también en la Isla Dinámica. La escribe tu iPhone, no gasta datos y no cuesta batería apreciable. Se quita deslizando sobre ella o con el mismo interruptor.

¿Puedo fijar un widget a una playa concreta?

Sí. Mantén pulsado el widget, elige Editar widget y selecciona el lugar. Salen tus favoritos y tus recientes, más la opción «último lugar visto», que es la de por omisión. Así puedes tener uno en tu playa y otro donde veranees.

¿Qué es el coeficiente?

La medida de lo grande que es una marea, la misma que imprimen las tablas francesas y españolas: 100 es una marea viva normal, unos 20 la muerta más floja y 120 la más grande del año. En la pantalla de los días lo tienes para los quince días siguientes, con el más alto destacado.

El agua está a 24° y me dice que el baño está regular.

Cada veredicto lo marca su lectura peor, no una media: una mar de fondo de dos metros o una corriente fuerte estropean el baño aunque el agua esté caliente. Debajo del veredicto te dice cuál es la lectura que lo frena, y a qué horas del día está mejor.

Y que quede claro: no es un aviso de seguridad. Las banderas, el socorrista y el parte oficial mandan siempre.

¿De dónde salen las olas, el viento y la temperatura del agua?

De Open-Meteo, el mismo servicio abierto que da la marea: el modelo marino para olas, mar de fondo, corriente y temperatura del agua, y el meteorológico para viento, rachas, UV, aire y lluvia. El viento puedes verlo en km/h, mph o nudos, en el botón i.

El widget no se actualiza.

iOS decide cuándo se refrescan los widgets, y los frena mucho en modo de bajo consumo. Abre la app una vez y el widget se pone al día. Si lleva más de un día desactualizado, dímelo.

¿Puedo usarla sin dar mi ubicación?

Sí. Salta el permiso y busca los sitios que te interesan por su nombre. Todo lo demás funciona exactamente igual.

¿Funciona sin cobertura?

Sí, con la última previsión que descargó. Verás un icono de «sin conexión» en la cabecera para que sepas que lo que miras no es de ahora mismo. En cuanto vuelvas a tener red, se actualiza sola.

¿Cómo borro mis favoritos o mis recientes?

Desliza sobre cualquiera de ellos en la pantalla del buscador. Los recientes tienen además un botón «Borrar» que los vacía de golpe.

¿Hay suscripción o compras dentro de la app?

No. Es gratis, entera, y no tiene publicidad.

To save a round trip, include your iPhone model, your iOS version and the app version — it's on the details screen, the one behind the i button at the top right. I usually reply within two or three days.

The tide times look wrong for my beach.

Tide models are computed on a grid of points at sea, and the nearest modelled point can be a few kilometres from a bay with its own behaviour. Enclosed bays, rias and Mediterranean spots with tiny ranges are the usual suspects. Send me the place name and I'll look at which point it's resolving to.

Can I use it for navigation or rock fishing?

For a rough idea, yes. For deciding whether to cross a bar, or whether a cove will cut you off, no. This is a global model, not the official table of a port authority, and the conditions and verdicts are not a safety advisory either. Use the official tables and the official forecast for anything that depends on being right.

It says my place is inland.

If there's no modelled sea within about 330 km the app gives up. If you're on the coast and it still says this, it's a bug — mail me the place name.

The header names a beach that isn't mine.

When the starting point is inland, the app finds the nearest stretch of sea and then names the beach or harbour beside it, so it doesn't just say “a point at sea”. If the name doesn't fit, search for your spot by name and star it: that name won't change again.

The heights come out negative.

By default they're measured against mean sea level, which is why low water shows negative numbers. If you'd rather have the familiar ones, open the i button and switch “Heights from” to chart datum: that's the zero official tables use, and with it every height is positive. The difference between high and low water is the same either way.

The app works that zero out from the tides of the place itself rather than reading it off a survey, so it can sit a few centimetres above or below the official one.

How do I set an alert before the tide?

With the bell in the header. Choose whether you care about high water, low water or both, and how much warning you want: 15 minutes, half an hour, an hour or two. The first time, iOS asks for notification permission; that's the only time it asks, and if you say no the rest of the app carries on as normal.

Alerts are for one place at a time: turn them on somewhere else and they move there.

An alert didn't arrive.

Three reasons, in order of likelihood. One: the permission is denied — check Settings → Notifications → MareAhora. Two: you haven't opened the app in many days; iOS wakes it now and then to renew the alerts, but if the phone was off or in Low Power Mode it may not have. Open it once and they're rebuilt. Three: a Focus mode was filtering notifications.

What's the countdown on the lock screen?

A Live Activity: turn it on with the “Lock screen” switch on the same alerts screen, and the countdown to the next tide stays in view, in the Dynamic Island too. Your iPhone writes it, it uses no data and no noticeable battery. Swipe it away, or use the same switch.

Can I pin a widget to one particular beach?

Yes. Long-press the widget, choose Edit Widget and pick the place. Your favourites and recents are there, plus “last place viewed”, which is the default. So you can have one on your local beach and another where you spend the summer.

What is the coefficient?

The measure of how big a tide is, the same one French and Spanish tables print: 100 is an ordinary spring tide, about 20 the slackest neap, 120 the biggest of the year. The days screen shows it for the next fifteen days, with the highest one marked.

The water is 24° and it says swimming is only fair.

Each verdict is set by its worst reading, not an average: a two-metre swell or a strong current spoils a swim however warm the water is. Under the verdict it tells you which reading is holding it back, and which hours of the day are best.

And to be clear: it is not a safety advisory. The flags, the lifeguard and the official forecast always win.

Where do the waves, the wind and the water temperature come from?

From Open-Meteo, the same open service that provides the tide: the marine model for waves, swell, current and water temperature, and the weather model for wind, gusts, UV, air and rain. Wind can be shown in km/h, mph or knots, under the i button.

The widget isn't updating.

iOS decides when widgets refresh, and it throttles them hard on Low Power Mode. Open the app once and the widget will catch up. If it's stale for more than a day, tell me.

Can I use it without giving my location?

Yes. Skip the permission and search for the places you care about. Everything else works identically.

Does it work with no signal?

Yes, with the last forecast it downloaded. You'll see an offline marker in the header so you know what you're looking at isn't live. It updates itself as soon as you're back online.

How do I delete my favourites or recents?

Swipe any of them away on the search screen. Recents also have a “Clear” button that empties them at once.

Is there a subscription or in-app purchase?

No. It's free, all of it, and there's no advertising.
